Given the current situation, the management of the faculty extended the application deadline. Students who will be unable to get a visa in time will start with the first semester online and then they will come to the Czech Republic for their second semester in Spring 2021. The admission process for degree programs in English will be online. You do not have to come to Brno to pass an entrance exam. Details of the study, admission requirements, etc. can be found on the program’s website.
This degree programme contains four disciplines focusing on issues relating to the study of English philology:
Within each of these areas, students take a number of type A/required courses followed up with a selection of type B/selective and type C/elective courses. The type A/required courses provide general introductions and the necessary theoretical background to work in the specific discipline in question. Type B/selective courses focus on specific topics within each of the disciplines. In addition, students have the opportunity to take a number of type C/elective courses of their own choosing. With the exception of some courses in translation, all teaching, coursework, and exams in this degree programme are carried out in the English language.
Graduates with this degree are capable of complex written and oral expression in English. They have a deep knowledge of the literatures, cultures, and histories of the major English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, and the Commonwealth countries. In addition to work in the fields of translating, interpreting, editing, journalism, tourism, and teaching (at both the secondary and tertiary levels), graduates are well-suited for any profession that demands the ability to think and express themselves independently and critically.
This fee-paying program is open to graduates of secondary schools holding a Czech maturita (secondary-school leaving exam) or an officially recognized equivalent from another country.
You do not have to come to Brno personally to take the entrance exam. The result of the admission process depends on the quality of the documents that you provide. Those will be assessed by the admission committee and you will be notified about the results via e-mail.
Admission to study English Language and Literature will be offered to those applicants selected by the Department's Entrance Exam Committee, based on a complex evaluation of the applicant's language skills, recommendations, and motivation.
1 January - 30 April for the following academic year.
Documents set out above in the Terms of Admission are required to be provided in digital form and attached to the online application by April 30th.
The First Year is composed of compulsory courses introducing students into the fields of the study dealt within the following years. In the second stage of the Bachelor’s degree studies (2nd and 3rd years), one course is compulsory and the rest are elective. At the end of their studies, students write a Bachelor’s diploma thesis and pass the final bachelor’s state exam which consists of four written exams in literature, linguistics, cultural studies, and the English language. Students are obliged to gain 4 credits in Philosophy and 2 credits in Physical Training (common courses compulsory for all students of the Faculty of Arts offered by the Department of Philosophy and the Faculty of Sports, respectively) and to meet the Faculty's criteria concerning other foreign languages (min. 4 credits). In order to be allowed to sit for the Bachelor's exam (AJL19999) at the end of the Bachelor's degree studies, a minimum of 170 credits must be gained.
