Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

Jak získat financování pro postdoky?

We would like to introduce the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), a European Union programme that provides funding for postdocs in the form of 2-year fellowships.

With other programmes linked to the application, the chance of obtaining the funding is very realistic.

Therefore, we would like to introduce you to the possibilities offered by the MSCA programme and support you in your application!

What is the essence of the MSCA?

The essence of the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) is to support the all-round professional and career development of young scientists.

The basis of the application is a high quality scientific proposal and the development of the postdoc's professional skills under the guidance of an experienced supervisor, whose role is very important both in the writing of the proposal and in the implementation of the project.

However, it is also important to have a career development plan for the postdocs in other areas such as intellectual property, open science, publication strategy, group management and communication of scientific results to the professional and lay public. The Project Support can assist you in developing a plan kaMSCA-PF, which is designed for postdocs who are changing location and transferring or have recently transferred to another institution.

Who can propose of the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship?

The MSCA-PF is designed for postdocs who are changing locations and are transferring or have recently transferred to another institution.

The applicant must meet the following conditions:

  • defence of their PhD no later than the deadline date
  • the applicant can be no longer than 8 years after obtaining the PhD degree
  • spent a maximum of 12 months in the Czech Republic in the last 3 years (short-term stays e.g. as a family visit do not count, it should be active pursuit of science/PhD studies outside the Czech Republic; counted towards the application deadline)

Practical: If you are recruiting a postdoc coming from abroad, we recommend that you always check whether they are eligible to apply for MSCA-PF! (This also applies to postdocs already recruited with a contract after 15 September 2020)

What fellowship offer?

The MSCA-PF offers funding for the postdoc's salary and also it also provides them with an allowance for their family and material expenses for 2 years:

What are the chances of getting a fellowship?

MSCA-PF is a highly competitive contest. For a postdoc to qualify for direct support from the MSCA-PF programme, their proposal must normally score around 93 %, which is achieved by 10–15 % of applicants.

But in addition to this basic competition, there are two other "sub-competitions" that you can enter, which provide the same level of support:

  • ERA Fellowship (formerly Widening Fellowship) – for postdocs in selected countries, including the Czech Republic, additional support is allocated to accommodate a larger number of applicants. The required score is approximately 90%. Approximately 20–30% of applicants are in the 90%–100% range.
  • MŠMT OP JAK – a programme announced by the MŠMT for applicants who have not been awarded the MSCA-PF, but whose proposal has been assessed as of high quality (so far the rating of 70% and above, which is surpassed by approximately 70–80% of applicants. For the first time, this call will be announced with a time gap, but the probability of success in receiving this support is very high (the 70% threshold will be officially confirmed after the announcement of this year's MSCA-PF call on 15 April 2021).

The level of the evaluation depends on the quality of the scientific proposal and career plan, the quality of the applicant and the supervisor, but approximately 90% of applications at MUNI have been evaluated above 70% in recent years and these applications are therefore eligible to apply for support from the Ministry of Education and Science.

What are the dates?

  • MSCA-PF call launch: 15 April 2021
  • Deadline for submission of applications: 15 September 2021
  • Announcement of results: February 2022
  • Expected start of MSCA-PF projects: June 2022 (delays of up to 1.5 years can be negotiated)
  • Announcement of the call of the Ministry of Education and Science OP JAK: spring 2022
  • Start of projects supported by JAK OP: January 2023

Tip!: Become an evaluator of MSCA-PF proposals and gain valuable experience

In addition to new MSCA-PF applicants, we are also looking for experienced scientists who would be interested in becoming internal reviewers for upcoming applications or directly become official MSCA-PF evaluators.

If you are interested in joining an internal group of scientists who are willing to review proposal concepts and give feedback to postdocs, please contact Jakub Zeman at zeman@rect.muni.cz.

If you are interested in becoming an official reviewer, you can find more information at this link:

https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/work-as-an-expert

Both options will definitely give you an interesting experience.

Where to get more information?

We invite you to attend an online seminar to find out more detailed information.

The seminar will take place on 28 April 2021 from 9.00-11.00 a.m. and is primarily for postdocs and their supervisors.

Workshops are then planned for postdocs and their supervisors during the spring/summer to learn more about the content and format of the MSCA-PF application.

REGISTRATION FOR THE WORKSHOP

Who and how will help you with the application process?

  • Mgr. Jakub Zeman - zeman@rect.muni.cz - Chief MSCA Coordinator at MU
  • JUDr. Sabina Krejčiříková - krejcirikovas@pharm.muni.cz
